Pete Hall won a copy of the 1948 SP San Francisco Industry
Map several months ago. He was gracious
to share reproductions of his win and I picked up my copy from him at the
Chicagoland RPM in October. Here is an
image of a small portion of the map that contains ATSF’s China Basin:
You can contact Pete directly at petehall6369@gmail.com
to purchase a copy for your personal use.
I highly recommend doing so if you model California in the transition
era.
I have also created an Excel version of the Index from the
map. Here’s a portion of that:

Thanks for sharing the map and index and for the huge labor of copying the index into Excel. I wonder how many occasional customers aren't shown on the index. For example, I have books with pictures showing streetcars arriving on flatcars to the former Market St. Railway, later Municipal Railway Elkton Shops adjacent to today's Balboa Park BART station. There was a track connection to the original SP line into the city. The SP tracks directly adjoined the streetcar facility. That doesn't even consider customers who used freight houses and team tracks.

Dan,
ReplyDeleteYour comment about occasional users doesn't have a complete answer. Many of the regular team track customers are included in the index at the team track (there were several in the city) that they used. The index numbers with more than a couple of users are usually team track locations. I'm visiting my brother and am going from memory, but I believe the freight forwarders like Acme and National Car Loading are there as they were big customers of the RRs. The occasional users are another story. For instance, the Fire Department isn't listed but almost certainly received the majority of it's equipment via rail, including long ladder trucks that only fit in the one off PRR 70 foot XA. The city directory was fairly thick and listed orders of magnitude more entities.
